Spanish and Creole

Yesterday a boy named Maxie came and is living in the apartment with us as he looks for schools to apply to in the area. Maxie is from Haiti and only speaks Spanish and Creole, so all of yesterday, mostly Spanish was spoken in the house. It was great practice for Emily and I. Yesterday, we also went to the supermarket. It's a lot like the ones we are used to in Nebraska. The only really strange thing is the fact that the milk and eggs are kept on shelves and not in the refrigerator section like in America. It's okay though because we always put it in the fridge when we get home so we can enjoy cold milk. We also made muffins for the bible study we had last night. After the muffins were made and the kitchen was clean we played a game of clue with some of the bible study members that came early, and as you probably guessed, yes I won the game. haha :) It was fun to play some of the games we enjoy in the U.S. here with the Dominicans and to share many laughs with them.

Later in the day we picked up two missionary pilots from the airport. What they do is volunteer to fly planes to smaller countries and bring supplies to missionaries living in those countries through an organization called Agape Airlines. They were very nice, and they brought us many stories about their travels. We were also introduced to the double cheek kiss greeting.

Last night we also had a bible study/dinner. There were probably about 25 extra people in the apartment, which is great because they were all their to learn more about God with Pastor Bill. One of my favorite things was, before we started the study, the Dominicans play music and sing, sometimes in Spanish or Creole, other times in English. Everyone gets some sort of instrument, like a tamborine or Moroccas, and with the help of a few other instruments, they make such great music. Last night we got a taste of Haitian music from some of the Haitian church members. Music from Haiti is a mix of merangue and african music. It is very loud but it is a joyful sound.
After the bible study there was a little time for fellowship. I took this time to practice my Spanish, which caused a little crowed to gather around me and watch me practice my Spanish. The people tell me that I am doing good, however, I'm not sure if its true or they are just being nice. Overall my experience here has been great so far.
